Poka-Yoke means error-proofing.
It is about designing a process, tool, or method so that mistakes are either:
prevented before they happen, or detected immediately when they happen.
We use Poka-Yoke because it helps to:
- reduce defects and rework
- improve quality
- protect the customer from errors
- make processes easier and safer for employees
- support flow by preventing defective work from moving to the next step
Examples:
- USB plug shape it only fits in the correct orientation, preventing incorrect insertion.
- Microwave door switch the microwave cannot start unless the door is fully closed.
- Car seatbelt warning a light/sound alerts you if the seatbelt is not fastened.
