Poka Yoke

Poka-Yoke means error-proofing.

It is about designing a process, tool, or method so that mistakes are either:

prevented before they happen, or detected immediately when they happen.

We use Poka-Yoke because it helps to:

  • reduce defects and rework
  • improve quality
  • protect the customer from errors
  • make processes easier and safer for employees
  • support flow by preventing defective work from moving to the next step

Examples:

  1. USB plug shape it only fits in the correct orientation, preventing incorrect insertion.
  2. Microwave door switch the microwave cannot start unless the door is fully closed.
  3. Car seatbelt warning a light/sound alerts you if the seatbelt is not fastened.
